Viken Detection Announces Initial Police Department Recipients for Its Recently Announced “VALOR” Program

Program Provides Underfunded Police Departments with Handheld X-Ray Backscatter Technology To Find Drugs, Cash and Weapons Hidden in Vehicles While Limiting Officers’ Exposure to Contraband and Other Hazards

BURLINGTON, Mass.–Viken Detection, pioneer of x-ray imaging and analytical devices, today announced the initial five police departments from around the country that will receive handheld x-ray technology for drug interdiction through the company’s “VALOR” program that was introduced in June. VALOR is an acronym for Viken Assisting Law-enforcement in the Opioid Response.

The program was created to provide refurbished technology, either free or at cost, to help law enforcement fight the opioid crisis and get drugs, cash and weapons out of circulation and off the street. The technology is a handheld x-ray imager called the HBI-120, engineered and manufactured by Viken Detection, that enables law enforcement to quickly, safely and cost-effectively find concealed explosives, narcotics and other contraband hidden in vehicles.

After receiving many applications, Viken Detection engaged an independent law enforcement veteran to select the first five recipient agencies that have been particularly impacted by the opioid epidemic. This morning, representatives from each of the initial five recipients chosen were presented with the imager at Viken Detection’s Burlington facility and received training on behalf of their respective departments.

“Police departments around the country have been asked to undertake a seemingly impossible task that has only grown in scope since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic and that is to protect the public from the opioid crisis,” said Jim Ryan, CEO of Viken Detection. “This handheld imaging technology has allowed drug interdiction officers to take thousands of pounds of drugs out of circulation already and it is our hope that with increased access to this technology, officers will be able to meet their public safety mandate better and more quickly as the opioid epidemic rages on.”

The recipient police departments are in Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Indiana. The presentations were given this morning at Viken Detection’s Burlington facility in an event that enabled Viken to recognize these officers for the work they and their departments are doing under difficult circumstances.

BURLINGTON, Mass.–Viken Detection, pioneer of x-ray imaging and analytical devices, today announced its “VALOR” initiative to provide free or at-cost refurbished HBI-120 handheld x-ray imagers to local, underfunded police departments. “VALOR” is an acronym for “Viken Assisting Law-enforcement in the Opioid Response.”

Viken Unveils the Osprey Integrated Checkpoint SolutionTM for High Throughput Passenger & Commercial Vehicle Scanning at US Border Crossings

Announces Award for Four Osprey-UVXTM (Under Vehicle X-Ray) Inspection Systems for Deployment at Two US Southern Border Points of Entry

BURLINGTON, Mass.–Viken Detection, pioneer of handheld x-ray imaging and analytical devices, today announced an award to install four Osprey-UVXTM under vehicle x-ray inspection systems at select U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) land points of entry. The Osprey-UVX, in conjunction with Viken’s widely deployed handheld imagers, provides U.S. CBP and other security agencies with a comprehensive, practical, affordable and safe non-intrusive inspection (NII) solution for high-throughput vehicle scanning at border, critical infrastructure and other security and military checkpoints.

“Together, Viken’s HBI-120 and Osprey-UVX represent a powerful combination in the fight against drug and human trafficking, and terrorism that targets critical infrastructure,” said Viken CEO, Jim Ryan. “Instead of solely relying on camera-based systems or canine teams, law enforcement and security professionals can actually ‘see through’ an entire vehicle in under a minute to safely make fast and accurate threat assessments.”

The Osprey-UVX is a fixed “in-the-ground” system that provides real-time undercarriage and lower vehicle imaging for security officers. Passengers can safely stay in the vehicle while under vehicle images are created using Viken’s X-ray imaging technology. Both a passenger and commercial versions are available, and mobile configurations are in the works. Viken is also launching its Osprey-EVXTM portal with demonstrations in the first half of 2020. The Osprey-EVX is a complementary solution to already installed Osprey-UVX units and is specifically targeted for locations with the highest traffic.

With nearly 1,000 units deployed, the HBI-120 is currently in use by law enforcement agencies around the country and with CBP at the southern U.S. border. The HBI-120 is responsible for significant seizures of cash, drugs and weapons concealed in vehicles. The addition of the Broadwing-LAD (large-area detector) accessory provides for wider and deeper (and thus faster) scanning, without an increase in x-ray intensity.

Viken Detection is the market leader in handheld x-ray imaging and in handheld lead detection, helping officials in each of these areas keep the public safe. Viken manufactured the first ever handheld device capable of imaging vehicles for drug interdiction.

Viken Detection Introduces Broadwing-LAD™, a Large-Area Detector Accessory for Its Market-Leading HBI-120 Handheld Backscatter X-Ray Imager

Broadwing-LAD Enhances the Capabilities of the HBI-120 for Drug Interdiction and Enables New Missions in Building Searches, Tactical Raids and Counter Surveillance

NEWTON, Mass.–Viken Detection, pioneer of handheld x-ray imaging and analytical devices, today announced the introduction of its Broadwing-LADTM accessory for the HBI-120 handheld x-ray imager. The detachable, lightweight, large-area detector enhances vehicle inspection capabilities for drug interdiction and enables new applications of the HBI-120, including building searches, tactical raids and counter-surveillance.

The HBI-120 is currently in use by law enforcement agencies around the world and with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the U.S. border. The HBI-120 is responsible for significant seizures of cash, drugs and weapons concealed in vehicles. The addition of the Broadwing-LAD accessory provides not only a deeper scan but also a larger view of items being inspected, including vehicles, and even allows authorities to “sweep” rooms to ensure safe entry for officers.

No other technology on the market can provide this breadth of capabilities.

“Our vision is to take Viken technology anywhere there is a public safety problem that technology can solve,” said Viken Detection CEO, Jim Ryan. “The addition of our Broadwing-LAD accessory enables superior threat detection across multiple public safety scenarios. As technology plays an ever more significant role in law enforcement, Viken is at the leading edge, developing new devices that are futureproof, multi-layered and open-sourced to allow them to work together with other solutions and keep the public safe.”

Viken Detection is the market leader in handheld x-ray imaging and in handheld lead detection, helping officials in each of these capacities keep the public safe. Viken manufactured the first ever handheld device capable of imaging vehicles for drug interdiction.
